Peter Jackson leaked some information about the upcoming Extended Edition of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King DVD!

During his appearance at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood on February 6th, Jackson gave these tidbits:

  • The feature will be 4 hours and 10 minutes long
  • There is exactly 50 minutes of extra footage not seen in the theatrical release
  • He just completed the project in New Zealand before heading to California for all the award ceremonies
  • It will be coming out later this year but no specific date as of yet

Peter also spoke of interesting information regarding his career, his future and LOTR:

  • He definitely wants to make The Hobbit into a feature film. He said it all depends on who has the rights and when that will all get resolved
  • King Kong is the film that actually got his blood pumping and fueled his imagination about being a filmmaker. He saw it in his living room when he was 9 years old and has never looked back. He is very excited to get to put his vision of the giant ape on film
  • It's actually thanks to Hugh Jackman that Ian Mckellen was able to portray Gandalf. When the first X-Men film was beginning filming the original Wolverine, Dougray Scott from Mission Impossible 2, was unable to film due to time constraints. The production may have shut down and not finished on time for Ian to leave for New Zealand to begin his trip to Middle Earth. However, Hugh Jackman stepped up to the plate and the film finished just in time for Christmas!
  • Peter Jackson actually wrote a letter to Brian Singer during the filming of X-Men to make sure his Gandalf was going to make it!
  • Elijah Wood was not sought out to play Frodo...He actually sought out Peter Jackson. Apparently Elijah rented a costume, got a video camera, went into the woods and began reading lines from the novels to prove he "was" Frodo Baggins. He sent the recording to Jackson and the rest is history
  • Peter Jackson felt Elijah was perfect for the role. What sealed the deal were Elijah's bright blue eyes. His eyes could actually tell so much about what the character was feeling and experiencing. Chalk that casting up to good genes!
