This week's is a definite classic, but is still unbeknownst to many people:

DAY OF THE DEAD
1985
Written/Directed by George Romero

Synopsis:
In this third film from the "DEAD" trilogy, the US and likely the rest of the world have been overrun by the undead. A small group of scientists and military are "safely" hidden in an underground bunker in Florida, emerging on occasion to search for survivors elswhere in the surrounding areas. Their purpose is to experiment on the behaviors of these zombies and see if there is a more feasible way to deal with or destroy them. Dr. Logan, the head scientist has a slightly different idea in mind and is actively finding ways to control and even teach the zombies.

Despite any progress that Dr. Logan may be acheiving, the newly promoted Officer In Charge Captain Rhodes decides that these experiments are nothing but a waste of time and are endangering himself and his men, as several have died in the course of rounding up zombies for the experiments. Capt. Rhodes, however is not of the most sound mind and decides he no longer wants to be in that bunker and will escape at any cost...

Review:
Perhaps one of the most overlooked movies of our time, DAY OF THE DEAD is certainly the pinnacle of what George Romero was trying to acheive with his DEAD movies. It combines the elements of the previous two movies, including social and political undertones, with those of ethics and the limits of sanity in adverse situations. DAY also proves to be the goriest of the three, providing plenty of goods for horror fans. The movie can be a bit slow at times and seem a little talky, but this actually builds a little more on the characters so that when they begin to die we actually feel sorry for them, or are glad to see them go. It also gives a bigger sense of desolation and isolation as they have not found any survivors and are completely surrounded above ground by the living dead.

Many who have viewed this previously have been slightly turned off by this particular entry in the "Holy Trilogy of Zombie Movies," but for those of you who didn't quite enjoy this on the first viewing, I encourage you to see it again. Overall this film garnishes 4 out of 5 bloody axes from me.
