Black Friday Got You Stressed Out? No Worries We've Got Some Awesome DVD Gift Ideas To Help You Decompress.

This year's list is broken down into several categories to help you navigate the complexities of those hard to shop for people in your life. Arm yourself with this list and all you'll have to worry about is battling those soccer moms for parking.

The DVD Report Holiday Shopping Guide 2009

For The Fanboys:

Futurama The Complete Set -
Quite possibly the most awesome set ever made every episode and movie ever made and...IT COMES IN A LIFE SIZE BENDER HEAD!! Go pick one of these bad boys up and make someone very happy.

Star Trek (2009)-
This ain't yo daddy's Star Trek, the new Trek will be debated but I'm telling you now the debate is pointless this movie rocks all on it's own and that is all that matters.

Star Trek: The Original Series Season Three [Blu-Ray]-

Having watched every single bit of the first two seasons in this awesome set I can tell you that using Vulcan logic says this set will rock just as hard. These things are breathtaking and worth every cent. Make the Trekker in your life VERY happy by picking this one up.

Harry Potter & The Half Blood Prince-

Also available this holiday is the Harry Potter 1-6 Ultimate Editions and a years 1-6 on Blu-Ray which is the way to go if you don't already have any of the Potter movies on Blu-ray. Odds are if you or your intended gift receiver have one you have them all so far which makes this a must.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine-
While I still remain divided on this movie (it's a Deadpool thing) it is enjoyable to watch for those X-men fans and makes a good gift.

FAMILY GUY: Something, Something, Something Darkside-
While American Dad is the far superior show in terms of comedy these days the Star Wars parody episodes are damn fun to watch for any fan of Star Wars. If for nothing else to see Han Solo (Peter Griffin) battle it out with Boba Fett (The Giant Chicken). Check out the trailer now on iTunes.

Robot Chicken Star Wars II-

Speaking of Star Wars parodies Robot Chicken can do it like nobody else can, with toys and really twisted ideas.

Mutant Chronicles-

Need a movie that's just insane? Of course you do and nobody does crazy better than Thomas Jane and Ron Perlman. On the plus side this flick also has the hot ass kicking Devon Aoki.

Battlestar Galactica The Complete Series & The Plan-

A must have for any fan of the show (plus it comes with a Cylon action figure), I loved this series and while I'm glad it ended when it did (for quality sake) I do get sad knowing there wont be anymore...oh but wait! There's Battlestar Galactica: The Plan! A direct to DVD fill in the black sort of thing where you learn more about the "plan" and some of the unknown factors behind it.

Watchmen The Ultimate Cut-
One of the years best films that could have easily been one of the worst things ever made. The path from graphic novel to film was a rocky one and the source material is a tough nut to crack. Thankfully it was in good hands and made a great transition to film. This new version of the film comes with animated footage spliced right back into the film for the most complete version possible.

GI Joe The Rise Of Cobra-
I gotta tell ya I was not remotely thrilled about this movie as it came towards the Cineplex, not the biggest fan of GI Joe (not a hater though). Then I got a look at The Baroness (Sienna Miller) and I changed my mind instantly. Ok honestly the movie is fun to watch and delivers on what it should be. And now you know and knowing is half the battle.

Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen-
Unlike GI Joe I was ready for some giant robot action but what I got was not anything remotely resembling a plot. Now I get that it's Michael Bay and the story is secondary but even the action gets tiring after awhile. Enjoyable but missed the mark for most. Buy with caution.

Terminator Salvation-
I love my Terminator flicks, shows, toys and comics. When I met up with McG at comic-con and got a chance to chat with him about his vision of the Terminator universe I have to admit the guy was very passionate about what he wanted to accomplish and what needed to happen on screen to sate the fans. While it's far from perfection it's a good ride through the world post Judgment Day and hit enough of the right notes to make it work. Don't let the overly picky ones tell you different.

Justice League and Superman The Complete Series-
Much like the Batman Animated Series Set these both have every episode and a nifty bonus disc. A perfect buy for fans of smartly done super hero stories.

Star Wars The Clone Wars: Season One-
This show got better with each episode and the second season is off to a rocking good start. This is a must for the Star Wars fan in your life (or for yourself). My advice: pick it up on Blu-Ray because it looks just stunning.

For The Couch Potatoes:

Adult Swim In A Box-

Here's what you get:
Aqua Teen Hunger Force: Volume 2
Space Ghost Coast To Coast: Volume 3
Moral Orel: Volume One - The Unholy Edition
Robot Chicken: Season Two
Metalocalypse: Season One
Sealab 2021: Season 2Aqua Teen Hunger Force: Volume 2
Space Ghost Coast To Coast: Volume 3
Moral Orel: Volume One - The Unholy Edition
Robot Chicken: Season Two
Metalocalypse: Season One
Sealab 2021: Season 2

Need I say more?

Robot Chicken: Season 4-

Toys and Claymation take you to places they really shouldn't and if you have a sense of humor you'll laugh your ass off.

Secret Diary of a Call Girl: Season Two-
While I haven't seen this yet it's got my interests peaked. Odds are you know someone who feels the same.

Mad Men: Season Two-
Super hip night time drama continues, with great production value and smart writing it's easy to see why this show continues to sweep up the awards and fans.

Dexter: The Complete Third Season-

The perfect gift for the serial killer in your life.

The Guardian: The Complete First Season-

Simon Baker is awesome and before he was The Mentalist he was The Guardian a very flawed but wonderful character. A good find for fans of good TV.

The Mentalist: Season One-
Saw this one coming next? Then perhaps you are Mentalist, or maybe just mental. Having recently finished up watching this set I highly recommend it. Baker is fantastic in this role just don't google map the goings on in this show, because they wont add up (watch the show you'll see). A great example of good fun TV.

Hogan's Heroes: The Komplete Series - Kommandant's Kollection -
Holy Krap! 28 discs of bubbling Nazi Komedy might just be too much of a good thing. I've been spending a lot of nights getting this holiday DVD guide together and much of that has had this one playing in the back ground and I'm still only half way through it all.

While the show has had a few releases before nothing like this has ever been seen before, every episode, a ton of features, and it looks and sounds amazing. Know a fan? Show them you love em by getting this set.

Rome The Complete Series [Blu-Ray]-

One of the best shows to grace paid cable gets the full Blu-Ray treatment and it is glorious!
If you don't get this..Roma Ignis!

Walt Disney Treasure - Zorro: The Complete First & Second Seasons-
I dug this show so much as a kid watching it with my Grandfather. Yes I know it's not hard to imagine with my love of super heroes and nearly all black wardrobe. Like many things from my childhood I've now introduced this to my little dude and he is loving it so far and I don't think it'll take long for us to watch both seasons. It's pretty amazing how well this show still looks and holds up, oh sure it's got it's share of cheese but it's good cheese not the stinky kind so it's all part of the fun.

Even better these sets come in those tin cases and come with loads of extra goodies. Get marked on your way to adventure.

Scrubs Season Eight Blu-Ray-
Say what you will but Scrubs is one of the funnier comedies around. There's a reason it's been on for eight seasons, two networks, and about a bazillion channels in syndication. Season eight was one of the stronger seasons despite being on the bubble and the network switcheroo.

While season nine may or may not be the end of the line (been said before), season eight certainly gave them plenty of jumping off points to get the ball rolling for a new season. Now you can go back and watch it all in High Def...Cougar Towns Courtney Cox in High Def. Heh heh. Scrub up and jump in the waters fine.

The United States Of Tara: The First Season-

While I haven't seen this show yet I've heard good and very interesting things about it. Worth a look I say.

The Tudors Season Three-

Three seasons in and this show is second only to Rome in terms of period piece cable drama. Where Rome has a bit more action The Tudors has a lot of sexy drama and twists. A must for fans.

Lie To Me: Season One-

One of the best new shows Fox has brought out of the stable and thankfully it survived to season two. Pick up season one for anyone in your life who enjoys good science drama..Or as a gag gift for that lyingisonofabitch in your life.

Better Off Ted: Season One-
One of the funnier new shows to hit screens this year, smartly written with a great cast the show is quite entertaining and could make a great gift.

Lost: Season Five-

As season six sits on the horizon this set is a MUST HAVE for any fan of the show. My advice Blu-Ray if possible because of all the special features. Odds are you know a fan and this is a good choice.

Something For The Ladies:

Weeds Season Four -

Puff Puff Don't Pass. Weeds has always been a really trippy show and this season was no exception. Don't miss out on giving someone you know a great high when unwrapping this one.

GLEE Season 1: Road to Sectionals-

This is one really whacked out show that has been gathering more and more fans. Having watched most of this season so far I can't put my finger on exactly what it is that makes this show work but it does. Make someone's heart sing with Glee.

500 Days Of Summer -
Here's one of those well done romantic comedies. It never suffers from the mundane nonsense that plagues so many others. Great script, cast and direction. A surprise gift giving winner.

RUBY: A Journey to Lose the First 100 Pounds-
Ahh yes the show someone people refuse to watch in my presence. Yes I make fun of it all, but it's not fat (or fluffy) jokes it's how lame everyone in this show acts. A good gift if you KNOW she's a fan, if you are not sure be warned this could be taken out of gift context and might get you kicked out of the snuggle club. You've been warned.

Keeping Up With The Kardashians: Season Two-
The train wreck rolls on this season....do you really want to miss out?

Will & Grace: Best of Love & Marriage/ Best of Friends & Foes-
A great gift for the fan in your life if you don't have the bones for full season sets. Grab the Will & Grace mix tapes for the win.

I Love You Beth Cooper-
honestly I have not seen this one yet, and sure it flopped at the box office but word is the movie is fairly decent.

Moonlight Serenade-
This is one of those films I'm eager to check out and I recommend it based only on my desire to see it.

Criminal Ways-
Cute crime comedy staring Borats wife? Of course I haven't seen it but the trailer looks fun enough to recommend this as a nifty little stocking stuffer.

Gone With The Wind 70th Anniversary Edition-

Straight out this is a must have Blu-Ray for fans of classic cinema. The film looks so crisp you'll get hot flashes and the sound is so crazy you swat at imaginary flies. Thank the gods we don't have high def smell-o-vision yet or that battlefield of dead soldiers would be a bit too much.

My Sisters Keeper-

Ok sure it's depressing, but the holidays are a time for inspirational stories, even sad ones.

My Life In Ruins-
While I did not dig this movie (pun) my sister swears by it and loves it dearly which is why it makes the list. You could do worse things than watching this to get yourself into the cuddle club guys.

The Proposal: Deluxe Edition-

Straight out I heard from a TON of people that this film was good. Naturally I didn't believe them but gave it a shot because I find Ryan Reynolds amusing. Sadly this film falls into the "take one for the team" category but makes a great gift for the rom-com lover in your life.

Cheri-

Who'd have though a movie about French hookers could be so artsy? Or depressing? Not a bad thing the movie is quite good just very surprising. Yes I'm suggesting you give her a French hooker from the holidays. You're welcome.

For All The Young Dudes:

Fight Club [Blu-Ray]-

On my list of "10 Movies you'd take with you on a deserted island" (I'd make a Blu-Ray player, TV, and power source from coconuts..See Gilligan's Island is educational) Fight Club has made the list from jump. Not only that it's one of those movies made from books that actually improved the source material (which is saying quite a bit).
For every generation there is a movie that defines each gender and Fight Club is certainly that for guys around my age. It's biting and cynical and brutally honest about how many of have felt or feel. Life isn't always sunshine and lollipops and it's a frustrating factoid to process. It took someone like Chuck Palahniuk to put it into words and someone like David Fincher to show it to us.

Inglorious Bastards-

QT takes on Nazi scum in his latest outing and its damn fine fun. Having had this film on his list for some time it's great to finally see it come to life as only he could make it.

Crank 2 High Voltage [Blu-Ray]-
Crank is one of those movies you either love or hate. Me I LOVE it! Both movies are so over the top crazy that it's like a breath of fresh air to the movie senses. Sometimes you just have to let go and have a movie kick your ass and the guys behind Crank understand that.

Arnold Schwarzenegger DVD Collection-
Sure even he can't get away with double parking but the guy made some of the best action flicks ever if your man doesn't have this he might just lose his man-card.

The Tournament-

Sounds like Mortal Kombat without all the suckage, I could be wrong since the movie is on its way and I have yet to view it but here's to hoping.

The Girlfriend Experience-

Want to see a porn star act? Of course you do. Worst case scenario is good sex scenes and unintentional comedy.

Secret Diary Of A Call Girl: Season Two-
Remember when I suggested you get your girl a French hooker? (See Cheri) Now it's her turn to get you a call girl. You're welcome.

Say Anything The 20th Anniversary [Blu-Ray]-

It's time to take another trip with Lloyd but this time you can do it in High Def with loads of extras. It might make you feel old but at least it'll do it in high def.

Public Enemies-
Johnny Depp and Christian Bale playing cat and mouse? Hell yeah! I nearly put this one in the ladies section but figured it had enough action to put it here. A gift you can share.

The WB Blu-Ray Action Set: Heat, Logans Run, And The Negotiator -

Earlier this month Warner put out these three films as part of an action trifecta, three very different films but three flicks you should pick up for your Blu-Ray collection. Any one of these films make a great gift just depends on his tastes.

For All Your Shorties:

Ice Age: Dawn Of The Dinosaurs-

The Ice Age movies are a bit of a hit and miss for me, I thought the first one was pretty entertaining but the first sequel just fell flat, but now the third flick in the series had me laughing more than the first. Sometimes the introduction of a new character (in this case Buck) doesn't add much to the proceedings but in other cases the new character is so funny it notches up the writing for all of them to bring their A-game. Buck (voiced by Simon Pegg) is so loopy cool that he not only makes the movie he saves it. This time around the herd bizarre-o has to venture to an underground hell pit to save the sloth but to do so must enlist the help of a crazy adventurer (Buck) to save the day before Manny has a pre-parental cardiac arrest. Ice Age is cool again so grab a snow cone and enjoy with the family.

Night At The Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian-

While I am not the biggest fan of the Night At The Museum series my son loves them both and so do most kids. They are good clean fun and promote the idea of going to an actual museum. A safe bet for holiday gift giving.

G-Force-

When I heard a G-Force movie was on the way I couldn't believe it was going to be done by Disney, good thing because this is not the G-Force I was thinking of (Gotchaman) and instead was kids movie with Hamsters. Mind you my kid has no idea about that other thing and enjoyed this movie so much he's seen it twice with many more viewings on the way once this arrives on DVD/Blu-Ray, take his word for it this movie is loads of fun for the kids.

Super Capers-

When I saw the trailer for this Super Hero childlike homage staring Chucks Captain Awesome we had to check it out. Sort of in the same vein as Sky High the movie is cute and goofy fun that pretty much any 7-10 year old (and big geeky men) is going to enjoy.

Shorts-

Still boggles my mind that the dude who gave us Dusk Till Dawn, El Mariachi and Planet Terror also occasionally pops out stuff like Spy Kids, Lavaboy And Sharkgirl, and now Shorts. Really?!

Even stranger is the level of misfires in the kids flick department, Spy Kids was kinda fun, but the sequels not so much, and Lavaboy is just unwatchable. So when I popped in Shorts I was prepared for the worse and hoping for the best. As it turns out Shorts is a 50/50 blend of fun and horrible. Keep in mind that's an adult perspective and my kid film lab monkeys enjoyed it plenty and have now watched it 3 times. Kid approved is all that matters but you adults have been warned.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Complete Season 7-

I haven't met many little dudes in my life that don't enjoy the Turtles, that said this set could be a good pick. See next for more Half Shell action.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Blu-Ray Set -
What comes in a pizza box loaded with extras and 4 movies featuring Ninja Turtles? You guessed it The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Blu-Ray box set. This set does in fact come in a pizza box style casing, all four films (the three live action and the CGI one), and a comic book. Once again a good pick for that little boy in your life, even better if he has a Ps3.

Total Drama Island-

This one just goes to prove that eventually there will be a Pet channel for Cat viewing and even they will have a reality show. Ok maybe I'm jumping ahead a bit but mark my words. Total Drama Island on the other hand is here now and is full of crazy characters and reality show style drama.

Leapfrog Learning Gift Set-
Something for the really little ones and something I cannot recommend enough, my son has had many Leapfrog videos and learning toys and they worked brilliantly to expand that developing nugget between his ears. Give the gift of learning.

Dora The Explorer: Christmas Carol-
I for one didn't know Dora was such a Scrooge guess she's hiding a few things in that backpack of hers. Ok I'm kidding I haven't seen this one yet but I know a couple of little kids who are going to make me sit for repeat viewings and I'm betting you might know a few of the same types.

Marvel Animated Features Gift Set-
Ultimate Avengers Ultimate Avengers 2
Dr. Strange Invincible Iron Man
Next Avengers Hulk Vs Wolverine/Hulk Vs Thor

Nice right? I do love that both DC and Marvel keep releasing these toons. Marvel seems to be mixing it up between titles meant for the kiddies and a few more complex ones meant for young adults. While we wait for Planet Hulk this set makes the perfect gift set for the little hero in your life.

Wolverine And The X-Men: Volumes 1-3-
Haven't gotten your fix of adamantium? Problem solved thanks to the latest X-men toon. Watch Wolverine get put through his paces while he struggles to lead the X-men to fight the future.

Spongebob Squarepants: The Fist 100 Episodes-

Sing it with me "I'm ready I'm ready first hundred episodes I'm ready I'm ready" This gift is approved by the President so you can't go far wrong.

Sesame Street: 40 Yeas of Sunny Days-
My gateway into Muppet bliss. How can I not recommend this one really. I love all things Muppets (warts and all) and there's no better example of wholesome and educational fun then Sesame Street. Heck buy this for your own inner child and it's a great gift.

Fraggle Rock: The Complete Collection-
Here we go more Muppets! Woo hoo! I never missed an episode when these aired; much like The Muppet Show and Sesame Street before it I had to have my fix of Muppet goodness. While the Fraggles are much different then it's predecessors it has all the charm needed for a great show. Is it just me or do the dozers have the best job security ever? Get this for the Muppet fan in your life..Maybe one day we'll get the rest of those Muppet Show box sets.

Iron Man Adventures-

Need some more Iron in your life? Well get ready for Iron Man Adventures to take you into the life of Tony Stark teenage superhero. While it's not a straight adaptation of any Iron Man book or movie it's still got it's fusion heart in the right place and could be a sweet gift for the Iron Man (boy) in your life.

The Complete Powerpuff Girls Anniversary Collectors Set-
Even girls want to kick some butt once in awhile, don't let the cutie pie curls fool ya. The first superhero cartoon to really appeal to little girls directly was also one of the funniest and well done. Filled with great battles, sisterhood, comedy, crazy villains, and good fun. Introduce a new generation of little girls to the real "Girl Power".

Up and Monsters INC [Blu-Ray]-

The two latest Pixar flicks to make it unto the best format for it Blu-Ray baby! Do I need to explain why these make good gifts?

Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs [Blu-ray/DVD Combopack]-

Disney's first child comes home on Blu-Ray. I have to say Disney has done an amazing job with these on High Def each restored release looks and sounds just amazing. It's like watching a brand new film.

For The Film Snob:

Paul Newman: The Tribute Collection-
Know someone who would love a huge set of Paul Newman? Look no farther than this tribute collection:
The Long Hot Summer, Rally 'Round the Flag Boys, From the Terrace, Exodus, The Hustler - Special Edition, Hemingway's Adventures of a Young Man, What a Way To Go!, Hombre, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid - Special Edition, Towering Inferno - Special Edition, Buffalo Bill and the Indians, Quintet
The Verdict - Special Edition.

See what I mean? 13 of his films (and some of his best at that) all ready for viewing. You can't do much better than this for that film buff in your life.

Surveillance-

One of the most interesting indie films this year, and yet far this is only the second feature length film made by Jennifer Chambers Lynch (yes her dad is David Lynch). This movie is just soaking in dark humor and gritty sludge. Know someone in your life that this sounds perfect for?

MGM 85 Years Of Stars Celebrity Giftsets-
Need some one stop shopping ideas for that mega film buff on your list? MGM certainly has some awesome choices ready for you. Even if it's not the film buff in your life there is something for everyone in this list.

Something To Tickle That Funny Bone:

The Mel Brooks Collection [Blu-Ray]-
Need to find the perfect High Def gigglefest for someone? You could start and stop with this set right here. Check out what you get: Blazing Saddles, Spaceballs, Young Frankenstein, High Anxiety, History Of The World Part I, Robin Hood: Men In Tights, Silent Movie, To Be Or Not To Be, The Twelve Chairs
Nuff Said.

The Hangover-
One of the surprise hits of the summer is also one of the funniest movies of the year. This movie is off the chain and the Blu-Ray has some really super extra features. In the greatest tradition of Bachelor Party and then taken over the top.

It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia: A Very Sunny Christmas-

One of the funniest and sickest shows on TV gets its own Christmas special and it's about damn time! A great gift for a fan of the show or anyone who is just a bit twisted.

All About Steve-
Now I have not seen this yet, but it's got a 50/50 chance of being decent since Bradley Cooper, but then again it's got Sandra Bullock as well. Could be a DVD winner but now you know the odds.

Bruno-
Know someone who likes their comedy sick and gnarly? Then Bruno is a perfect choice.

Nick Swardson: Seriously, Who Farted?-

Did you like Grandmas Boy? This is one of the main people behind it. Nick is a geek comic who can run the gambit between pot, video games and gay porn (sometimes all at once).

Joy Koy-

This is one of the best stand-up specials of the year if not the decade. Joy just rips it up on stage and doesn't stop till it's all over. Pick this one up and get ready to LMAO.

The Goods-

This is one of those "How did this ever get made" comedies. But in a good way. It's so odd, strange, and funny. Not for everyone but damn funny if you have a bit of a goofy sense of humor.

For The Sports Nuts:

ROCKY: The Undisputed Blu-ray Collection-

Does this need much explanation? Probably not. All the Rocky flicks in one hand high def set. Nuff Said.

Tyson-
All about Tyson as Told from Tyson himself. How can you not want to see this? A great gift for the boxing fan.

Facing Ali-

While this one doesn't hit streets until after Christmas a pre-order makes a good gift as well. One of the greatest if not THE greatest of all time gets his own new doc as told from the people who knew him best; the people he stepped into the ring with.

OH The Horror!:

The Gate: Monstrous Special Edition-
It has been a long while since I've seen this one and watching it is such a trip, while it's not as comedic as stuff like Monster Squad it still feels like it belongs in the same film viewing slot as it. Ahh tween horror from the 80's.

Let The Right One In-
Screw all this Twilight crap get a quality vampire film for that special someone. This is how a vampire movie should play out, creepy, dark, and weird.

Fear Itself-

Why let one horror director scare the eggnog out of you when you can get three. Grab this 13 episode set and let the good times roll.

The Orphan-
Nothing is quite as creepy as children antagonists in horror movies. The Orphan certainly delivers on the creepy kid thing but it is a slow burn of a film. Like most horror flicks these days expect a twist or two at the end. Adopt Esther today for the tax credit and screams.

Jennifers Body-

Megan Fox playing a hot ass demon killer? Worth the price just to ogle. Sure the movie flopped a bit and took a bashing from critics but don't let that stop the T&A Fox Train.

Thirst-
Another great vampire flick and this time from the director of Old Boy. Another great bloodsucking gift to give to that New Moon fan in your life to show them what a real vampire movie looks like.

Paranormal Activity-
I'm sure you've heard of this one by now and while I'm not sure if the hype train is accurate the movie is interesting but slow until things get going. A great pre-order choice for the ghost story fan on your list.

Hope You Enjoyed The Guide. This Year Happy Hunting Out There.
