Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Iron Man, Batman Begins, Gladiator, all have one thing in common, a great score that perfectly complements the action and drama on screen. And the (new) Incredible Hulk score promises to be fantastic! {sidebar id=1}Let's go back to 2003 and Ang Lee and the first adaptation of the big green guy on the big screen. The film was forgettable but the score was not (that's not a complement). It stuck in my head and drove me insane. The "wailing woman" score is what I like to call it. Don't remember? Pop it in the ol' DVD player and see what I am talking about. The whole film was accompanied by the wailing woman, enough to drive you crazy. If you do remember without having to rewatch it, don't worry, the shuddering will stop eventually. One of the major malfunctions of Lee's film was the poor choice in music. As producer Kevin Feige tells us, Lee was going for a "world music feel." Well, considering the location of the story, that really didn't make much sense, but then again, not much in that film did. We brought up the score question to Feige during our talk, more wailing (I hoped to God not)? Hopefully a change for the better? Here's what he and director Louis Leterrier had to say about their new score IESB: What are you guys doing to make sure the score matches Hulk this time around? Kevin Feige: Ang was going for a very specific, sort of, world music theme that he wanted and Mychael Danna did a first go around and Universal thought it might be too much and Danny Elfman came in and I thought did a very good job sticking to Ang's vision and what worked for the film. What Louis and Gale and I wanted on this one was a big orchestral score and a unique audio cue for Hulk. When you walk out of the theater if you watch a commercial, if you're in your kitchen and you watch a commercial of the Hulk, you'll recognize it not only from the roaring but from this musical cue that we have, the way with any great film score, you would get and Louis is very interested in bringing Craig Armstrong on board, who's done a number of great scores, nothing quite of this scale necessarily Gale Anne Hurd: He's done the Baz Lurhmann moviesand World Trade Center. KF: Really, really talented guy, and I thought he knocked it out of the park. He's based in Scotland, he spent a number of weeks out here. Louis spent day after day after day with him. We scored it in Seattle and when we were up there listening to what this orchestra was doing it was reallyI was very pleased with it. And I hope it comes across, but it's very powerful and big, emotional and driving and there's a particular cue, you know it's hard to latch on to things the first time you hear them but there was a little bit there at the University and by the ending it's really a signature thing. Even more so than we've had in any other Marvel movie, there's a signature music cue. Louis Leterrier: There's an hour and forty minutes of music in the film and it doesn't feel like it's wall-to-wall music, it's really good. It comes in and out and that sort of thingCraig is amazingWhen I first started working on him with this one, I said, "themes, themes, themes, I want themes. Let's be really bold with the themes, they can be 2 or 3 note themes but I want people to come out of the theater and whistleso lots of themes and we are so proud we are putting out a double CD of everything in the movie because we are proud of this score. Keep an eye out for the Double Soundtrack CD coming soon! It's up for pre-order at Amazon.com now! HULK SMASH THEATERS JUNE 13TH!!!
