Got this great write up of the story details behind the Warner Bros. remake of FORBIDDEN PLANET, what's most interesting is the direction the film is going.

{sidebar id=1}The film is written by J. Michael Straczynski and is due out in theaters in 2010 from WB and Silver Pictures.

A few months ago, Straczynski had a few words to say about his version of Forbidden Planet, I told [producer] Joel [Silver] this is how you do Forbidden Planet without pissing on the original that no one has ever thought of. When I told [the idea] to him, his eyes lit up. Its not a remake. Its not a reimagining. Its not exactly a prequel. Youll have to see it. Its something that no one has thought of when it comes to this storyline.

Now, IESB has found out exactly what he is doing and it's genius, pure genius. I am a fan of the original film and this doesn't tread on anything that it shouldn't. Let me explain.

Altair IV, the site of the famous FORBIDDEN PLANET 1956 film set in the early 2200's.

16 light years from Earth, two ships have visited the planet, a mere twenty years apart.

The first, Bellerophon, was never heard from again. The second was a new C-57D Starcrusier with Commander John J. Adams at the helm that was sent twenty years later to investigate. What happened to the crew of the Bellerophon?

The original Forbidden Planet film was a telling of the story of Adams' investigation and what his crew found on Altair IV. They get a rough idea of what happened to the Bellerophon crew from the only survivors, Dr. Morbius and his infant daughter (who now happens to be a nubile 20 year-old, how convenient) - his wife survived the initial slaughter but later died of other causes.

The story follows Adams and his crew who encounter strange goings-ons on the planet of Altair and who find Dr. Morbius to be a bit suspicious. We find out what happened to the crew of the Bellerophon and follows Adams and his crew on their fight to survive.

The new Warner Bros. remake will not be retelling the story of Adams so it is not in fact an exact remake. Instead, the new Forbidden Planet film will be telling the story of the first ship, Bellerophon and exactly what happened to that crew. How did everyone die? Why did only Morbius and his family survive? What did he learn about the Krell civilization?

All these questions and more will be answered in the FORBIDDEN PLANET take two!

Thanks to IESB reader Jamon, he gave us the lowdown and here's Part 1!

DETAILS REMOVED AT THE REQUEST OF WARNER BROS. STUDIO

I have a bad feeling about this! I don't think they're gonna make it!

Well, that's it for Part 1 of IESB's FORBIDDEN PLANET story details.

What did you think so far? Big enough opening? Do you like the idea of using the story of the first ship Bellerophon instead of the second ship sent to search for the missing crew as in the original Forbidden Planet?

Send you thoughts to me, would love to hear them!

IESB had more Forbidden Planet news earlier today regarding a possible director to bring the story to the big screen, read it here.
