For the fans that have been following the new Superman project over the past few years there is no doubt that it has been plagued with countless amounts of problems. From one of the first scripts that Kevin Smith wrote to the latest that J.J. Abrams penned all have ended up at in the failed category.(Click here for Abrams script review.)

Both Kevin and J.J.'s scripts were top contenders to become reality but ended up not being used for various reasons. As Kevin Smith told the IESB "Tim Burton wanted his Superman to be dressed in black and have scissors on his hands" in reference to how different Burton's Man of Steel would've been to the established vision of the fans. In regards to J.J.'s script not being used all had do with McG "not wanting to get on a plane" Smith said. McG has been rumored to have been dropped because he wasn't willing to travel to Australia. It seems that McG is not fond of airplane travel and that was the main reason he was pushing to film stateside.

The IESB also had the chance to talk to J.J. Abrams regarding his involvement with Superman. " I love Superman and I would love to see him on the big screen" Abrams said. There has been plenty of talk that Tom Welling was being considered for the role of Superman so we asked Abrams how he felt about tying in Smallville to the Superman movie. "I believe that they should leave Smallville on the small screen and have something totally different on the big screen. I enjoy Smallville but I don't think that crossing it over to the big screen would be a good idea" Abrams told the IESB.

James Caviezel, Josh Hartnett and Jake Gyllenhaal have all been rumored to be the top contenders for the coveted superhero. Abrams did confirm to the IESB that all three of these actors were McG's top choices for the role.

Meanwhile at last night premiere of the Exorcist that was held at Grauman's Chinese Theater in Hollywood IESB's very own Jeff Girard was able to speak to Big Brother's Nathan Marlow who recently auditioned for the role of Superman. " I auditioned for the role of Superman, you know it's kind of funny, I went in there and Jake Gyllenhaal was right in front of me and Josh Hartnett was coming in after me, I was surrounded by all these "A" list actors but I went in and auditioned for it and the casting director liked me but I think that I got to get away from all the reality buzz to be considered for Superman, the casting director is also the same one for X-Men 3 so I'm hoping to maybe get a part in that one" Marlow told the IESB.

Marlow did say the audition was recent and it was with new director Bryan Singer. So it does seem that Jake and Josh are both still battling to see who wears the coveted blue tights. Hartnett's new interest in Superman may have to do with the recent director change and that the new movie is no longer a three picture deal.

Stay tuned to the IESB for more Superman news!
