Script Review: Keanu Reeves Vehicle 47 RONIN

An IESB reader who likes to call himself GHOST has written in with a review of the latest Keanu Reeves project, 47 RONIN...whoa...I know kung fu, not Samurai! Set to be directed by Carl Rinsch and written by Chris Morgan, 47 RONIN is set up over at Universal Pictures and chronicles the famous story of a band of Ronin (masterless Samurais) who go on a quest to avenge the death of their master in 18th century Japan. In "47 Ronin," Reeves plays one of the swordsmen; the group and their master are revered in Japan for their revenge attack on Dec. 14, 1702. The film will tell a stylized version of the story, mixing fantasy elements of the sort seen in "The Lord of the Rings" pics, with gritty battle scenes akin to those in films such as "Gladiator." Check out what GHOST said about the 47 RONIN script below! My recent acquisition comes in the form of a film adaptation of the Japanese legend of the 47 RONIN, written by Chris Morgan. I will warn you now, if you decide to continue reading this will include spoilers, suffice to say the article may even self destruct after reading. The film opens with a title card explaining the setting, feudal Japan, age of the Shoguns and Samurai and the Code of Bushido. One important note is that is any samurai were to ever fail or lose his master or betray the code he becomes Ronin. Thus begins the legend. Things continue to shots of a Samurai hunting party followed by their supply train of peasant hauling supplies. Here we meet our hero and star, oddly enough named HIRO. HIRO is a half asian, half European peasant of the lowest class. Since he's a "halfbreed", he's considered lowest of the low. Back to the hunting party we meet LORD ASANO, the noble ruler in his 60s of these people and his second in command OISHI KURANOSUKE in his 40s. They are tracking a beast of some kind that has been harassing the country side. Long story short HIRO saves the day and lets a cowardly young samurai named YASANO take the credit since he is of such low class. All the while OISHI actually saw the whole thing happen. Back home at the AKO CASTLE, the Lord's daughter, Princess Mika watches the party return. She's looking for someone in particular. He father arrives and addresses his men. HIRO the lowly peasant watched as the men walk off to their places of honor while he can't be a part of it. Much to the surprise of HIRO, OISHI catches him and tell him that if it we possible he too deserves the honor, but it's not due to HIRO being a half breed. We later see HIRO trying to wash the anger away as someone walk in on him... we then realize the person the Princess was looking for is him. The next day LORD ASANO is preparing for the arrival of the Shogun, or Imperial Guard. We also learn that one of the rules during their visit no blade is to unsheathed, not even a kitchen knife. To draw any blade what so ever carries a death sentence. The Lord also makes a comment to his head of staff that his daughter is seeing someone as he caught her sneaking back to her quarters. Next scene is of OISHA's home and his family. We meet his wife, HISAE and his son CHIKARRA. He is small for his age and has difficulty sparring with his father. Despite the reassurances of his father, CHIKARRA he is not ready to be a Samurai. They are interrupted by a messenger, none other than HIRO, from the castle that an envoy from the Shogun has arrived and apparently way too early. So back to the castle we go to meet the main antagonist. The envoy turns out to be LORD KIRA YOSHINAKA, and yes the guy really existed and is the cause for the revenge to come. This guy is so damn pompous it's ridiculous. He is the Shogun Master of Protocol and a wealthy aristocrat. You can pretty much imagine him looking everything over with much disapproval since he is obviously higher up on the food chain. Along with him is his enormous body guard in full armor. LORD KIRA kind of mocks LORD ASANO and talks about his land and his daughter in a manner that suggests he wants them for himself. After he leaves, ASANO and OISHI talk about how tradition has been lost and all that people think about now is status and how they both would love to just squash LORD KIRA like the little bug he is. Cut to the scene of the Shogun army arriving. Imagine something in the form of Xerxes army from 300. Enter SHOGUN TOKUGAWA TSUNAYOSHI, by far the most imposing figure as of yet in the movie... this guy is huge and scary, he is the very image of war and control. After some awkward pleasantries we give way to the ceremonies. The Princess performs a dance that enthralls LORD KIRA. She shoots a fleeting glance at HIRO that OISHI catches and is now aware of their little romance. Now things are about to get interesting. As part of the festivities, Samurais from all the houses in attendance have a ceremonial battle. Imagine a bunch of roided out guys in full armor each representing their masters. Turns out that the Samurai to do battle for LORD ASANO is missing. So HIRO being the messenger is sent out to find him along with CHIKARRA. Long story short the guy was poisoned, by I wonder who, and CHIKARRA convinces HIRO to take his place... Not the best idea but oh well, so long as his helmet stays on he should be ok. HIRO hold his own really well until the only guy left is LORD KIRA's enormous body guard. This guy manages to get the best of HIRO and manages to throw him to the ground in defeat also managing to knock off his helmet, much to the disappointment of everyone. HIRO manages to take the blame for the whole ordeal and save LORD ASANO but the damage is done. Lucky for HIRO that his life is also sparred since he is a half breed animal and not worthy if killing. He is none the less reminded by the Shogun leader that can never be a samurai because he is a half breed. Punishment is then carried out in full view of everyone present. He is stripped of his armor and beaten with batons within an inch of his live. Throughout all this LORD KIRA is relishing his little victory and LORD ASANO realizes through the heart wrenching reaction of his daughter that the man she has been seeing is HIRO. Cut to LORD KIRA pacing in his room talking to a ratty old woman, possibly the same that he used to poison the Samurai earlier. By some sort of witchcraft they trick LORD ASANO into thinking that his daughter is in trouble. He hallucinates and runs to her room, bursting through the door with sword drawn only to realize he is actually in KIRA's room and is now standing over him right as the guards storm the room. Now having broken the rule of drawing a blade while the Shogun is in house, he is sentenced to death at his own hand or seppuku as is the way of the Samurai. Dressed in all white he is taken to the ceremonial room where this is to take place. I'll leave out the ritual suicide details but suffice to say he dies. In the aftermath OISHI and his men are stripped of their armor and honor and deemed RONIN, the lands given to KIRA to govern and he takes PRINCESS MIKA as his to be bride after her year of mourning for her father is over. Thus he will own his lands and have his daughter. As much as the Samurai vow revenge OISHI tells them to wait, for them to strike when least expected. They are disbanded and scattered across the country. HIRO is sold as a slave to Dutch traders, and OISHI is sent to prison for a year. They vow to return after the year and take their revenge. After the year is up and KIRA thinks that OISHI's spirit is sufficiently broken he is released. He reunites with his wife and son and sets of to gather up his men. After breaking out HIRO and gathering what's left of the RONIN from the countryside they gather in a hidden place. They realize they there are only 46 of them left. CHIKARRA volunteers and they become... The 47 RONIN. Here's where I will sum up the endind. They set off to a hidden/fabled place to find weapons, all the while being followed by KIRA's NINJA CLANSLORD spy and his men. Inter-cut with scenic footage, a fight scene between the men and the ninjas, we come to the final turn of events. Finally they get to exact revenge for their master. HIRO has earned the respect of the rest of rest of the men an he will fight as one of them. They sneak their way into KIRA's stronghold and turn the place upside down. Long story short they kill KIRA, behead him and take his head back to their master's former castle. With their master avenged they now face justice at the hands of the SHOGUN. The sentence is death because they defied the law of no revenge, but because they exacted justice and followed the Bushido Code they receive death sentences as Samurai, all including HIRO. CHIKARRA is spared due to age and so his father's name may live on. They all commit Seppuku, and are buried as SAMURAI next to their Master LORD ASANO. Thus is the "adapted" story of the 47 Ronin. I must say it looks like a pretty awesome script and could be a pretty epic movie. Call me GHOST!

Exclusive Photo Gallery: Red Carpet Premiere of NINJA ASSASSIN Plus Character Details

The red carpet premiere for NINJA ASSASSIN was held in Hollywood this week. The cast and crew from the film including director James McTeigue, producer Joel Silver and star Rain were in attendance as well as some celebrity guests. IESB's Rick Chavez was on the red carpet to bring our readers an exclusive photo gallery after the character details below! The character of Raizo, played by Rain, is brought as a child to the orphanage run by Lord Ozunu, who heads the Ozunu Clan. There Raizo is trained to be a heartless assassin, but he also finds someone to give his heart to, Kiriko, another young trainee. Her terrible fate, however, seals Raizo's as well and he rejects the clan, making it his life's mission to try and stop them. Raizo's main objective is to trace his way back to the secret location of the Ozunu clan's orphanage and to make sure that no more children are kidnapped, brutalized and turned into assassins. At the same, time he must prevent them from killing him as well. Says Silver, "Raizo is so genuine, he is really trying to rise above the hand that was dealt him, to reject the monster who trained him, and become a better person than he was taught to be." "Raizo is a great assassin, one of the best students Lord Ozunu has ever had," says Rain. "But the bloodshed gets to him, and he has to escape. But you can never leave openly. And by leaving, he must betray Ozunu, who will then stop at nothing to destroy Raizo. So Raizo leads a quiet, anonymous life...knowing that one day, Ozunu will find him." The role of Raizo called for an actor with a special intensity, who could convey a lot of emotion in a very subtle way. "Rain is smart and instinctive and incredibly dedicated," says McTeigue. "He was a joy to work with." Silver adds, "Rain really is a magnetic personality. You can't take your eyes off of him, he commands the screen." Operating in the outside world, Raizo must stay one step ahead of the clan. But the murders are being investigated, and one researcher at Europol stumbles onto the notion of the nine ancient clans that have trained assassins--ninjas--to perform murders for a fee: the price of a pound of gold. But she is getting too close, and she is now marked for death by the Ozunu clan. Raizo saves her life, and they are forced to go on the run together. Naomie Harris plays agent Mika Coretti. "I just loved the character and felt a real connection with Mika," relates Harris. "She is different from any character I've played before. I really liked her passion and enthusiasm, and that she believes anything is possible, which is what I always believed as well. Like the fantastical is possible." "Naomie absolutely got what we were trying to do," says McTeigue. "The character of Mika is really strong and Naomie saw that and completely took her on." "Mika's investigating this bizarre myth, this legend, this rumor," says Sand. "Her obsession leads her into terrifying danger, but also leads her to the truth." "Mika's work is really her entire life," says Harris. "So when she finds something, she is like a dog with a bone. She doesn't let go of it until she's worked everything out. She likes putting the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle together. She's found a lot of evidence to prove that ninjas exist, and she's not letting it go." Mika's initial challenge is convincing her boss, Ryan Maslow, that she's onto something real. British actor Ben Miles, who plays the skeptical agent, says, "I play a kind of hardened cop. One of his young researchers, Mika, comes to him with a seemingly harebrained scheme about ninjas assassinating people now, in the 21st century. He tells her that she can't seriously think that some guys dressed in black with swords are going around knocking off these high-profile political figures. But Maslow doesn't always do things by the book; he has a bit of a maverick approach and may have his own plans, so he lets her go with it, and the movie takes on this suspenseful layer upon layer of who you can trust, who you can't trust, whose side should you be on. It's a great kind of clash of thriller, film noir and martial arts." Miles, who first worked with McTeigue and the producers on "V for Vendetta," enjoyed working with his old friends again. "They have this verve and enthusiasm and a kind of unpredictability, so it was great fun on many levels. Plus getting to do all the action stuff, you can't beat it." Through Mika's research, she helps Raizo find his way back to the source: the orphanage and his original master, Lord Ozunu. Legendary martial artist and famed ninja movie veteran Sho Kosugi--who has participated in more than 300 tournaments and numerous films, including five previous ninja movies--took on the role, which thrilled the filmmakers. "If you've ever watched any ninja films from the 1980s, you know that Sho Kosugi is the ninja; he is the man," asserts McTeigue. "He was the only person who could impart the discipline of Lord Ozunu. He embodied the clan master." Of course, the actor was nothing like the character he played. "Every time he had to do something mean or aggressive, he did it, but as soon as I called 'Cut,' he'd say, 'Oh my gosh, he's a very bad man, that clan master!' And he'd start laughing and smiling." Although he was playing a bad guy, Kosugi--who has studied martial arts since the age of five and who still practices about three hours daily--truly appreciated the thought that went into creating his character. "I was shocked when I saw the script, when I saw the name Ozunu, I smiled because what most people don't know is there was a real Ozunu, who was born in the Kinki District and is the ancestor of the Shugenja, mountain warriors who practiced Shugendo. He's an ancestor of the ninjutsu. So the research was so good. To play this role, I was honored to do that." Ozunu's strongest weapon in the fight against Raizo and Europol is his protege and Raizo's onetime "brother" in the clan, Takeshi, played by Korean-American actor Rick Yune. Yune has something of a martial arts background himself, having qualified for the Olympic Trials in Taekwondo, the national sport of Korea, when he was 19. "Ozunu is a father figure to Takeshi, and he wants to emulate him, to stay loyal to him," offers Yune. "This is Takeshi's family and this is what he's been brought up to be. He is all the things that Raizo did not want to become." The actor found his way into the character by connecting with a phrase he found in the script. "It says that ninjas only kill two kinds of people: those they're paid to kill and those who get in their way. All he wants to do is be the best ninja possible, and to get closer to Ozunu, his so-called father. So he lives by this code in order to stay true to his family, to the clan." Raizo's only real friend at the orphanage is Kiriko, played by Kylie Liya Goldstein as a young girl and Anna Sawai as a teen, who tries to convince Raizo that there is a better life outside the dojo and away from the clan. Her punishment for trying to escape becomes the catalyst for Raizo's eventual desertion. In the film, Ozunu kidnaps children from around the world--ostensibly lost children who don't have families--and brings them into the clan, giving them a family. "What we did initially to find the children," reveals McTeigue, "was go out to a lot of dojos throughout Berlin, where we were going to be shooting. We then brought them in and trained them for a few months, and they became the other orphans who lived in the clan alongside young Raizo and young Takeshi as their brothers and sisters. Being a part of that kind of family entails training, through a series of disciplines and over a number of years, to become a killing machine, an assassin who acts without a moment's hesitation.

Interview: Zac Efron, Claire Danes and ME AND ORSON WELLES

One of Hollywood's most promising young talents, Zac Efron's career in film and television continues to evolve with challenging roles in exciting projects. Transitioning effortlessly from the small to big screen, the actor is now playing Richard Samuels, a 17-year-old who happens to land a role in a re-imagined production of Julius Caesar from a young director named Orson Welles, in Me and Orson Welles. At the press day for the film, Zac Efron and co-star Claire Danes, who plays Sonja Jones, Welles' assistant and a love interest for both characters, talked about developing their 1930's characters. Q: What made each of you decide to do this film? Zac: It was different and it was a very unique opportunity for me, at the time, and still is. It was something that didn't seem so cut and dry. It wasn't an obvious decision, and even I was a bit surprised, and that's very cool. I hope I can continue to maintain that and have those options. We do this to grow and try new things, and that was exactly what this movie represented for me, so thank God. It came at a perfect time. Claire: The script was wonderful. It's really not that often that you read a script that is immediately engaging, coherent and charming. I loved all of the characters. They were all so detailed and specific. And, Richard Linklater was directing it, and I just love his work. Zac: It seemed ambitious to me. Rick always says we made a screwball comedy about Welles, which is something he would never have done himself. We put him into a movie that he never would have been a part of. Q: Zac, how do you feel about the fact that something you wear usually effects fashion a little bit? Zac: It's all about accessories. I notice people that look good. I notice fashion on other people. I enjoy when people try to look their best. I was always taught to try and look my best. That's my main influence. I'm not looking to influence fashion, any more than the next guy. But, I try to do my best when I'm out representing my movies. Q: Did you like the clothes from the 1930's in the film? Zac: I think I stole some of the stuff. On the last day, they always try to get it out of your trailer, really quick. I always steal some of my wardrobe. I never know what I'm going to need. Q: What kind of research did you do for this role? Did you read the original book? Zac: I read the original book. For my age, I pretty much had the standard knowledge about Orson Welles. I studied him in high school, a little bit before that, and was familiar with a lot of his work, like the War of the Worlds radio broadcast. Coming into this, I thought I was pretty well-read on Orson and then immediately found out that I hadn't even scratched the surface on this guy. Rick Linklater was the one who really filled us in and supplied us with endless literature, articles and old photos. I think I've seen every picture of Orson that ever existed. Q: Were you a fan of his work? Zac: Yeah, definitely Claire: It's hard not to be. Q: What was your first introduction to Orson Welles? Was it through a movie? Claire: I discovered Orson Welles in college. My freshman English professor screened Citizen Kane for us and I ended up writing a 20-page term paper on it. I'm sure that I'm not the only one. Many a term paper is dedicated to Orson Welles. So, I fell in love with him there, and since then I've seen a few other of his films, but didn't realize that he'd been such a revolutionary figure in theater as well, and then radio. He was really a maverick, in so many different mediums, at such a young age. It's mind-boggling. Zac: At 22, he'd done more than anybody could ever dream. Q: He was pretty arrogant at 22, though. Claire: Well, yeah, and rightfully so. The movie talks about the confusion of that. Even Sonja says, "With someone like Orson, you excuse a lot of behavior." It's true. When somebody's ego is in service of really brilliant, innovative work, it's hard to criticize their failures as a human. Q: Zac, what was your first introduction to Orson Welles and when? Zac: I was probably 16. I had worked with a director who said his favorite movie of all time was Citizen Kane and, as a wrap gift, he gave me the DVD. I was definitely fascinated by it and thought it was an incredible movie, but was probably too young to fully appreciate it, at that point. Q: Your character, Richard, has to learn a lesson about dealing with Hollywood-type egos. Have you had to learn any lessons like that? Zac: I think things have changed a little bit. I've never had an experience quite like that. I'd say it was reminiscent of a lot of my early theater experiences. It's pretty cut-throat and there was always another kid to pull from the sidelines, ready to take your place. But, I never experienced a guy quite like Orson. Claire: Not many people have. Q: When preparing for the project, did you just sit and watch The Magnificent Ambersons and then justify it as research? Claire: I didn't with this movie. Zac: This movie predates any of his films. At this point, in Welles career, he hadn't done that. Q: Did you want to just watch any of his films, though? Claire: Netflix is great for that. My husband (actor Hugh Dancy) and I watched a lot of Hitchcock movies in bulk, and there's a lot to be gained from focusing strictly on one artist's canon. I recently presented Robert DeNiro with an award and watched a lot of his movies. It's true that, when you see the work in concentration like that, it's really revealing. Q: Zac, does it give you a sense of accomplishment that, because of your participation in this film, you're going to have a lot of young people out there get introduced to Orson Welles, who maybe never would have? Zac: Exactly. People ask, "What about Orson Welles is going to attract a young audience?" But, what I'm hoping is that the audience that does come is able to enjoy this experience with such an iconic guy. Hopefully, it'll spark their interest and they'll be able to learn more and go find out about Welles and his amazing, very interesting roller coaster career. Q: Your character, Richard, is based on a real person. Did you get to meet him? Zac: No. He's based on a real person, but Rick Linklater was very hands-on, in trying to get as much of his story as we could. All the stuff with setting off the fire alarms was real. Other than that, he steered pretty far away from the real guy. Q: Did you two meet over coffee or anything to talk about your parts before filming? Claire: We rehearsed, mostly with Christian McKay and Rick Linklater, for a few days, and then they rehearsed again with the people in the play within the movie. I wasn't involved with that. Q: Claire, since Sonja wasn't based on a real person, but was a compilation of people, did you base her on anyone you knew? Claire: No. She's written so well. She was really vivid on the page, so I didn't have to stretch my imagination too much. She's bright and she's ambitious. I'm always impressed by that. I always think that's a good thing, especially in that time when woman were discouraged to do that and their goals were more confined and limited. Sonja is pretty brazen. Q: What was it like to rehearse with Christian and develop your characters? Claire: He was great. He adapted it pretty brilliantly. Zac: Originally, he alluded to the fact that he was a bit nervous, coming in with very little experience on film. And, I just remember that, from the second I heard him speak and hung out with him and saw his personality, I'd never felt more confident in a leading man. He's very intelligent and a very quick study. Me and Claire sat in the room on the first day of rehearsals, when he read his lines for the first time as Orson, and were shocked. I was floored. Claire: He'd also played the role on stage, and that was a good foundation for him, but he was playing him much later in life. Zac: He exceeded our wildest expectations. It was absolutely incredible, and even better just to be with him and hang out. He definitely deserves all this. Q: Zac, have you seen any early drafts or songs for Hairspray 2? Zac: No, not at all. Q: Are you going to do it? Zac: You know what? I have not heard anything about it at all. Q: Are you doing Jonny Quest? Zac: Once again, I don't know. Q: You recently wrapped The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud in Vancouver. Who do you play in the film? Zac: I play a character named Charlie, who is the golden boy in his high school, and then his life takes a turn with the death of his little brother. It's a story about how he copes with that, and it's a love story. It's hard to explain. It always comes across like I'm digging graves. Claire: Also, he's just finished filming it. I never know what a movie is about, when I've just done it. I get too close to it and it's fuzzy. Q: Claire, what are you doing next? Claire: I'm doing a movie for HBO, called Temple Grandin (about a woman who became a best-selling author and one of the top scientists in the field of humane livestock handling). ME AND ORSON WELLES opens on November 25th
