Manny Coto is going where no one has gone before, okay well at least not since Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan. Borderland is a bold attempt to bridge prior Star Trek series to Enterprise. Not only are they re-introducing stories and species from TOS but they are also bridging the series by having TNG's very own Brent Spiner guest star.

Spiner will be playing Arik Soong, an ancestor of Dr. Soong, the creator of the android Data which have both been played by Brent Spiner.

This episode starts off as Klingons aboard a Bird of Prey discover a shuttle pod with life signs of two humans on board. The Klingon Captain orders to dock with the shuttle pod, as the two humans are being escorted to the Klingons brig we soon discover who these two humans are. The are actually a pair of Augments who have purposely deceived the Klingons so that they can be brought aboard the ship.

Once aboard the pair are able to easily over power the Klingon crew and capture the ship. This much action at the beginning of an episode has not been seen on Star Trek on a very long time.

We go back to Earth and are introduced to Arik Soong as he is being held captive in a Starfleet prison for stealing genetically enhanced embryos 20 years before. He was caught a decade later and been incarcerated ever since. Captain Archer has a meeting with with Soong to discuss what has recently occurred near Klingon space. After an investigation Starfleet is aware that it was the Augments responsible for hi-jacking of the Klingon vessel.

Archer brings Soong aboard Enterprise to help Starfleet find the outlawed Augments. In route they are attacked by a couple of Orion spaceships. The design of the ships are very sleek and "Romulan" like and they quickly start to disable Enterprise, within seconds nine Enterprise crew members are transported off the ship.

This is when we are treated to some Orion Slave Trading action which is headed by WWE superstar the Big Show. The look of the male Orions is very reminiscent to Gamorrean Guards without the pig face. Of course we are treated to seeing the auctioning of a female Orion and we are quickly reminded of the "Ravenous Appetite" that these girls have.We soon realize that this mandatory pit stop and encounter with the Orions may have not been an accident.

Borderland is an episode that truly lives up to the Star Trek franchise and is quite obvious that someone new is at the helm of the series. Revisiting old Trek species is not enough to revive this series but the writing combined with the action is a sure winner. I am sure that some Trekkers would like to know how exactly is the Eugenics War going to be handled. So far so good, the clothing , the hair and even the attitude of the Augments should make hard core Trekkers happy. This is part one of a three part series which make us wonder if we will see some kind of reference to the most famous of all Augments...KHAAAN! Sorry had to do that!

4 out of 5 stars
