First V For Vendetta and now The Watchmen for McTeigue?

Robert is still in New York just finishing up his coverage from the New York Comic Con. He had really great video interviews with both Todd McFarlane and Frank Miller so look for those soon!

He also had the chance to speak one on one with V For Vedetta director James McTeigue and David Loyd, the original illustrator of the graphic novel of the same title.

While talking with McTeigue, we asked if he had any other graphic novels or comic books that he would like to help adapt to film. Specifically, is there anything out there that he would really like to tackle?

McTeigue says he would like to do The Watchmen.

I am sure most of you remember the 12 issue saga from DC in the '80's (for those of you that don't, shame on you!)

The Watchmen was comprised of 12 books written by Alan Moore, who also penned V For Vendetta and From Hell, and released by DC in 1986 and 1987. A plot to kill superheroes was discovered after The Comedian is found dead. Based in an alternate world where superheroes have been outlawed, many of them are now retired and live in a world that is dark and hopeless.

The title was taken from the old saying "who watches the watchmen?" Or in this case, if the superheroes are here to protect and save us from the evil villains of the world, then who will protect and save us from the superheroes?

So far as adapting this story to film, it's been in the works for several years now. First with Terry Gilliam and Sam Hamm attached back in 1989. It was scrapped about trouble adapting the story.

In 2003 Paramount Pictures tried its hand at reviving this story with a highly acclaimed script written by David Hayter. Darren Aronofsky was originally attached to direct but left the project and was soon replaced by Paul Greengrass. Due to budget issues, it was again dropped in summer 2005.

Warner Bros. picked it up in December 2005, most likely in the hopes that a successfull V For Vendetta release would warrant another Alan Moore title to be adapted. Paul Greengrass and David Hayter have reportedly dropped out.

So there is an empty directors seat that may soon have McTeigue's name on it if V goes as well as planned. We shall see!
